Hello guys,
I am very new to this. I have an HP iPAQ 6500 with TomTom and I downloaded San Francisco as my free city. I would like to get San Jose also. So I went to TomTom site under the Plus service and I purchased the map. Now, 'to correctly encrypt the map' they ask me for my specific software version and device code. I followed their instructions and went to 'About GPS' but found PocketPC device in the place where I was supposed to find the device name. How can I do this?
Thanks guys, I am really new to this...
best,

PocketPC is the default device name given by Ipaq.
I assume you found this by "change preferences" and then "show version". If so the software version is in the second line down and the device code is towards the bottom (just above the tom tom website address). Or at least it is with my Ipaq 6340. _________________ Peter

I actually got it by 'change preference' and then 'about GPS Navigation' and it has the following exactly:
PocketPC device
App cersion 4.500 (3130)
Free Ram: 3.8 mb
GPS driver v1.20
Map: 'San_Francisco_CA' v468
Language: English US
(c) 1992-2004 TomTom BV, The Netherlands.
Patents pending.
Data (c) Tele Atlas NV Digital Mapping; (c) Prdnance Survey Crown Copyright; (c) Norwegian Mapping Authority; (c) Statens Karverk; (c) DAV
GPS NAVIGATION
powered by TomTom
Now which TomTom version am I using? is it TomTom 5? should I upgrade to TomTom 5?
Also, what's my device code from what's written above?
Thank you much for your help...

Ah ... just realised. The 6500 series comes with a cut down version of TT - version 4.5 (it does in Europe anyway so must be the same in the USA). That is confirmed by the second line of info you have given.
The simple answer is that none of that info gives you the device code. You get that in TT5 by choosing "change preferences" then "show version" on about the third page of options. If it is not the same in TT4.5 then I don't know how to get it - I can only suggest you speak to Tom Tom.
As for upgrading - I don't know enough about TT4.5 to know what the advantages are - but somebody here should. _________________ Peter
