Updating maps

Very sorry if this question has been answered before but I can’t seem to find the information I need when searching the forums.

Can someone please explain if it is possible to update the maps on my tomtom go 700, and if so how?

How do I check the current version of the maps I have? My tomtom says I have Version 5.201 when I tap the GPS signal bars. Is this my firmware version number or map version?

I found on the tomtom website an update that can be downloaded for the GO series but it does not mention maps at all (http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?FID=1750)

I did read in the forum that tomtoms (GO 700) bought after November 2005 can be sent back for a free update, I got mine in December but I do not want to send it back as I use it everyday, plus some people are saying you get a refurbished one back which I don’t want.

If someone could explain what the situation is with updating maps, how I go about it and is it free or do I have to pay?, it would be a tremendous help.

The map version is also on that screen, but 5.201 is the software version. Your map should say something like 652 or so.

You can download newer maps from the TomTom PLUS site, or wait for the annual release of the software which normally also includes maps.

Generally speaking maps are not free, you have to expect to pay for them.
