advice please on moving map project

My son is making a university project documentary on troop dispositions on D Day. I have original Operation Bigot maps and also modern French IGN "GPS" maps of those areas.
Im looking for advice on which applications would be most suitable for using this info with my Memory Map (or any other suggested programs)

No matter if you use Oziexplorer or Memory Map - your maps need to be calibrated. This means for at least two well defined spots on the maps you need to know Latitude and Longitude. Depending on the map projection you will need more calibration points. preferably in a grid all over the map. Otherwise the position error may get too big.

If you have contemporary maps of the same area you may be able to borrow the coordinates from there.
