One thing is already clear: that CF is approx 3 times faster than SD which is consistant with the official specs of the cards, cf. http://www.davespda.com/hardware/expansion/cfmmcsd.htm



Also, the version of the GPS driver will have no effect on the calculation times. The GPS driver only provides a standard interface between the various GPS devices and various Tomtom products. Your current position is not needed to calculate the route from A to B (except to possibly decide where B is at the outset)

Maybe if someone is really bored they could workout a more scientific test, with 2 set points, settings & version, than the only difference would be the PDA & the CF/SD Card used. An average could be calculated so everyone can compare PDA's & Cards.

I wouldn't worry about it, as a long term TTNv1 user who never got around to jumping through the hoops to upgrade to TTNv2, I decided to buy Copilot Live V4 mainly for the "tracking" feature.



Compared to Navigator the directions leave a lot to be desired. You can't rely on the voice instruction you need to keep on looking at the screen to see where to go next.



So on Tuesday I bought TTNv2, installed Wed night, back to sensible directions.

Ok, Since I started it:-



The Route is:



From - Lands End A30, at the very end, where it turns into the Unnamed Road, right on the fork

(Longitude 005'42'26"W & Latitude 050'03'58"N)



To - John O'Groat A99 / A836, at the junction of the A99 / A836 / Unnamed Road

(Longitude 003'04'08"W & Latitude 058'38'19"N).



TTN2 Version is:



v2.24 GPS v 2.07



With default speed settings.



Once I've upgraded from 2.06 to 2.07 I'll post my calculation time, with the Make, Model, Processor Type & Speed of my PDA and the Make & Size of the CF/SD Card the Map is stored on.

3mins 48secs route calculation time:

836.7 miles

197004 roads

14hrs:21mins:50secs



I performed this twice to confirm.

Ok, I couldn't sleep last night and for fun ploted a route from Lands End (Unnamed Road after the A30) to John O'Groats (Unnamed Road past the town) the longest route I could plot. It's 838.9 miles and would take 14hrs 37mins to drive. Tomtom checked 215772 roads and calculated the route in just 3mins 10sec which I didn't think was to bad.



I have a Dell Axim and my map is on a SimpleTech 256mb SD Card, I was wondering if any other sad bored person wanted to see how quick there system could calculate the same route. I didn't know if 3mins 10sec was quick, slow or average.

Going by all of the above (not the Copilot).



16 times posted 11 SD Cards & 5 CF Cards.



Overall Average is 3mins 40secs



CF Cards are quicker with an average of around 2mins 19secs.



SD Cards seem to have a bigger time range, but average around 5mins 12secs.



So in conclusion CF Cards are well over twice as quick as SD Cards, but saying that I know of someone with a 256mb ScanDisk Ulta CF Card which won't work the route out, I also has a 256mb ScanDisk SD Card which also won't work the route out. So it all boils down to the Make of the card you have.

I have given up this calculation as my time stands at 15mins with only 154000 roads, 185 miles to go and less that 50% done. Why on earth is it taking so long?

I can't explain why your set-up is so slow gstenson, but I'm sure someone will be able to offer advice.



Bear in mind that the last third of the route calculation takes little time at all. Mine took about 20 secs to work out the last 1/3 of the journey (actually the first 1/3 of the journey as it works backwards I believe).



Make sure no other applications are running in the background, perhaps do a soft reset first. You may have a dodgy SD card. It may need defragmenting.



Search HP's website for problems such as you are having (this is how I found out that the iPAQ 3900 series had problems with slow SD card access with a particular ROM version).
