Navman SE sleeve with ver 3.x

I have a Navman 3400 working with version 3.5 here in the states. I bought a used "SE" sleeve (which I understand is a 3450) because it's supposed to have a quicker cold start and the ext antenna jack.

When I got it, I tried it very quickly at my house and it picked up 4-5
satellites. I then took it on a trip with me and couldn't get it to work at all
and fortunately had the 3400 to fall back on.

I know I need to troubleshoot further but am wondering if you guys think that this would be a hardware or software issue. I read something about a serial driver for this sleeve but also saw a note that it wasn't needed for version 3.x

Someone else had an issue like this and took apart the sleeve and resoldered the connection in order to get it to work.
