Do i get one of these?
Well it's that time of year again, my phone contract is up for renewal.
I have been after a GPS ideally a Quest as my first unit. But will this the job and some more?
I can get myself a O2 XDA mini s as an upgrade http://www.my-xda.com/xdaminis.html
Do i do this and get myself a GPS program, antenae or bluetooth, case and Ram mount for the GS?
But the GPS programs seem to be quite expensive so should i concentrate on getting a dedicated GPS. Maybe i'm just looking in the wrong place re: cost.
Has anyone any experience of Co-Pilot etc on one of these. Had a look at one today they are an excellent piece of kit, with a screen slightly bigger than the quest it seems.
The intention is to use it day to day as the XDA but use the GPS on the my motorbike. Hence i thought a bluetooth antenae would be good. Then either rely on mounting in a line of sight location or just put it in my pocket and use either cable or bluetooth headphones.
I understand these units can be run in flight mode ie phone off. Would i be able to run the GPS / bluetooth like this to extend battery life.
At least if i get one of these it would get used all the time, against how much of the time would a dedicated GPS unit sit around doing nothing.
Any advice or ideas for where to get cheaper software etc
Thanks in advance

There is also the XDA atom but I don't know if it is out in the UK yet http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_xda_atom-1372.php
You might want to have a look at TomTom for the XDA and see what you think.
I have used CoPilot 5 on my C500 Smartphone in the past and CP5 was such a piece of junk that I swore that I would never give ALK money again. Loads of bugs and no fixes were forthcoming. There were a lot of other bitter CP5 users here too. I ended up buying a Quest to replace CP5 and never regretted it.
The Quest is a nice unit, simple and robust - switch it on and it just works. The lack of a touch screen makes address input a bit of a fiddle and it doesn't do speed camera alerts are the two main drawbacks.
I love being able to plan the route on the PC and then upload it to the Quest. Quite often on the bike, I don't want to take the Quickest route, I want to take the "most interesting route" and having the maps on the PC makes this easy to plan.
I wrote quite a long ramble about the various systems here.
Whatever you buy watch out for the map prices. Sometimes you get full EU maps but other times you get UK maps only and the EU maps are an expensive upgrade.
Flight mode on a PDA/Smartphone will switch off ALL radio signals and this includes Bluetooth.
Oh and to the forums too. there is a Motorbike forum here, come on over. :D _________________ Gone fishing! |
