All in one or components - my experience

It's taken me some time to work this out, so maybe this is helpful to other newbies. When buying sat nav / GPS you need three components - a display and processor; software; and a GPS receiver. You can buy them in almost any combination as long as they are compatible. For example ...

* You can buy an all in one dedicated sat nav (e.g. Tom Tom One)
* You can get a PDA with an integrated GPS receiver and put on whatever GPS software you like
* You can get a PDA, a separate GPS receiver (wired or BlueTooth - BT - connected) and your choice of sofware.

There are all sorts of bundles offered; for example, TomTom 5 (software) bundled with the TomTom BT receiver, for use with your choice of BT-enabled PDA.

Remember that sat nav kit is very attractive to thieves, so you'll want to make sure it is easy to hide or remove from your car - which is why I bought a PDA solution, as I would want the PDA with me in any case.

I've bought the Acer N30 PDA and the TomTom bundle (just over £300 buy buying from two different sources), and am delighted with it - but I wish I had understood more about the choice of options beforehand.
