Right then, I've decided I wish to fully update my TomTom Go Classic (the original one) to bring it fully up to date on the Firmware and Map front.

But 1st I should say I've lost my original registration code. (It was never used as the unit worked fine out of the box) and I never bothered to registed anything with tom tom.

Ok, that to one side for a moment.
A few weeks ago I tried to just update the firmware up to the latest 5.something (download from tomtom)

I did as instructed and al went fine, my unit rebooted then said I needed to re-activate my original GB map, which I could not do as I don't have my code.

So my questions:

Am I right in thinking if I buy the new/latest GB map from tomtom £40 then I will get a new activation code so I don't have to worry about having lost the original one?

If that's the case, then I have 1 other point of concern.

I think I read you can't use the latest maps on old firmware (which I have) so that means I can't install the maps (using the new activation code) unless I first update my firmware.

And if I try and update my firmware, the tomtom won't start up as I need the Original activation code (which I don't have) to make the unit get past the startup activation screen.

Chicken and egg scenario!!!!!

Is it possible to update BOTH at the same time (new firmware and new maps) then turn on the tomtom using the new activation code to get the unit working again?

If so, is there a RIGHT way to do it (which to do 1st) as I don't want to screw it up.

Many thanks.

If you have already updated the firmware then just install the new maps. You will then be asked for the activation code which you get by entering the map code and device code into www.ttcode.com.
Thats the way I would do it anyway.
