your maps came preactivated. But if your GO crashes and you need to reinstall everything (or if you use a different SD card) then you need that card. _________________ Lutz

whatever you do, don't loose the code as you will have to go try and get another one from tomtom if your unit crashes and that can take weeks. Write the code down on your PC or log it with tomtom.com (but dont forget your user details) _________________ Regards

Reinstall:
SD card: Are you sure? I upgraded to a larger SD card without once referencing the plastic card. Had no problems at all. All works fine. I would recommend it to anyone, upgrade the card to a bigger capacity and add any updates to that. Leave the original unused for a very safe backup. Oh and also do a backup to CD of course.

It could come in handy, one day, if in the copying process a problem arises that makes a reformat necessary.
I have to admit that in upgrading SC cards, I have never had to re-activate. _________________ Richard

Now this is what I was planning to do - "upgrade the card to a bigger capacity and add any updates to that. Leave the original unused for a very safe backup. Oh and also do a backup to CD of course." ..... But I ahve no idea where to start??? (Sorry to be SO ignorant! )
I have actually used the original so obviously it won't be completely unused, but I felt the sooner I could do as above the better ....
I put the disc (CD) in the computer and attached the TomTom which seemed to work okay. I went to "Back up/restore settings" and "Back up settings to your computer". There was a bit of clicking (from the CD??) and it went back to the screen to back up again.
Has it backed up anything??? If so, where has it put it?? I can't find anything new anywhere on my computer .....
If not, what am I doing wrong?
Also reading other posts, I gather this will only back up part of what is on the card - how on earth do I back up the whole thing???
Sorry to be so ignorant Hope someone has the patience to help!!
Marian (obviously a COMPLETE beginner!!!).
HAPPY CHRISTMAS!! :D |

Hi Marian.
It depends on which version you are using.
Version proir to V5.2 would only backup your settings. From V5.2 we were allowed to backup everything from the Setup program.
To find which Version you have switch the 300 on and itap the screen where the Sats 'bar graph' is displayed. On the next screen it will tell you what version you have.
You can backup manually, which is the way most users go. It's up to you.
I suspect that you have only backed up the Settings. These can usually be found in \Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\TomTomGO
Do you have a Card Reader? This speeds up the Backup and Restore of Data.
Either way works, it's just a question of time.
Come back with which version you have and we'll take it from there. _________________ Richard

What a speedy reply- even on Xmas Eve!!
It says version 5.201 .....
No, I don't have a card reader. I have bought a "SD card" though, 256 MB - I am hoping that's the right thing (but if not I know it will fit my camera so all is not lost!!)? I just have no idea what to DO with it
Hope this helps!
Happy Christmas!

If you run the 5.201 setup program again you should have an option to Backup/Restore. Select that and click the arrow.
On this screen you should have 4 options:
Backup your personal settings
Restore your personal settings
Backup your TomTom GO
Restore your TomTom GO
If you select 'Backup your TomTom GO' it will copy everything on your SD card to your Hard Drive. It will place it in a Folder as I described previously.
When the Backup is complete, and make sure it has finished by using Safely Remove Hardware (there should be an icon in your Sys Tray).
Switch off the 300. Swap the SD cards over , re-plug in the USB lead and switch the 300 on again.
On the TomTom Setup, again, choose Backup and Restore.
Then Choose 'Restore your TomTom GO' and this will copy the original back to the new card.
Use the Safely Remove Hardware again, unplug your 300, and you should be up and running. _________________ Richard
