Hi All,
Was recommended this site and forum, and it looks fantastic, so much information, so hope you can offer some advice to a GPS newbie!
I've decided to update my aging PDA to the new iPaq hw6515 (or hw6510), because I still need all the mobile apps, bluetooth will be useful, but also would like GPS nav built-in without other wires and devices other kits require - so it looks good for an all-in-one, albeit expensive. I also like the idea of the tiny keyboard as when taking short notes in meetings the handwriting recog. on normal PDAs is useless - although it does mean a smaller 240x240 screen.
The GPS facility I'd like mainly for occasional, to once a week, use in the car when travelling to new appointments in the UK (rarely if ever in other countries), and perhaps very occasionally on foot if it's good in cities!
The basic pack, only has a one city sample download for TomTom (what a con!).
I've been looking at some on-line deals, TotalPDA (www.totalpda.co.uk) has different packages with UK maps, but you also get a discount voucher to upgrade to the Uk/Europe with TomTom direct.
Has anyone brought this iPaq (or hw6510) and has any advice, or better deals anywhere?
It looks like the voucher with the unit lets you buy the UK only maps for 110 Euros or the full Western Europe for 129 Euros (surely the best buy 19 euros for all extra countries?), providing these are full street gps maps...
The best on-line price I could find for the hw6515 was £414 (353 ex VAT) from Savastore (a decent online PC store)
(Amazon is £449, Dabs £422 etc.)
However, and this may be the bargain of the year, my local John Lewis have it in stock for... £339 inc VAT (£288 ex VAT), that's a massive saving of 75 quid! It's in their "switched on Christmas gifts" catagloue. Out of stock on their website, but many stores have stock. So if you want one, I'd give pop into their shops!
Just thought I'd let you know my tip of the day.
I'll let you know how I get on with the TomTom when I order the full maps 8)
