Hi, I have noticed lately that when I am in my van the tom tom go 700 is 3mph slower than on my speedometer. Any ideas?
Purchased unit in July 2005.

Yes, put it back in the box and return the GO - it's faulty! Joker

Sorry, I couldn’t resist it, as that question has been asked many times before. Thumbs Up

Seriously, the GO's speed reading on level surface, in a straight line, at a constant speed, will always be more accurate than your van's speedometer.

Regards,

Yes, but not by very much!

Assuming that the GO measures the horizontal component of your speed, your actual speed will be higher by a factor determined by the Secant (reciprocal of cosine) of the slope. The error is only 1% for 8 degrees (1 in 8) - so it's still a damn site more accurate than the exaggerometers fitted to most vehicles!

Assuming that the sat nav is correct - I think you are quite lucky to have a speedo which is only 3mph out! If I remember correctly, a speedo is allowed to be 10% out.

My understanding is that most (if not all) speedos overstate your actual speed.

also if you have fitted non-standard wheels/tyres to the van/car, this will affect it also.

And may consequently be illegal. Any replacement tyres should have the same rolling distance as the factory specified originals.

Not necessarily, however any modifications that affect the accuracy of the speedometer may be an offence unless it is re-calibrated accordingly.

They have to be within 0% to +10% (i.e. they must never tell you you are going slower than you are, but can overstate the speed by 10%) -
