|
|
When I started with TomTom 5, I could not get the 7-digit postcodes to work. While the solutions are on the forum, not all of the information is together, so I thought the following step-by-step guide might help. It includes advice that I received from several helpful members of the forum.
I have aimed the instructions at users who can get TomTom to run, but not 7-digit postcodes. I have preceded each step with a note of the problems that led me to include it.
STEP 1
Some users do not realise that, when setting a destination using postcodes, thy need to use a dedicated icon under Navigate To. Therefore:
Use Navigate to… Postcode; i.e. NOT Navigate to… Address
STEP 2
Ultimately, I found that my problem was due to a memory error. Therefore, before assuming that TomTom itself is malfunctioning:
a) Exit all applications, including TT 5.
b) Find out how much free Main Memory your Pocket PC should have with no programmes running and no user files stored in there. Compare this with the actual Main Memory (use Settings – System – Memory – Main). If short of memory, do b) and c) below.
c) Make sure no programmes are running in the background (use Settings – System -Memory - Running Programmes).
d) Make sure as few files as possible are stored in Main Memory. Use file explorer to move any user files (e.g. from Pocket Word or Pocket Excel) to storage card(s) - SD, CF etc. If possible, remove applications from Main Memory and re-install on a storage card.
e) If still short of memory, perform a hard reset – after backing up any applications and user files.
STEP 3 (TomTom 5 CD-based copies – NOT pre-installed SD card versions)
I found that the installation utility for maps and postcodes would not work straight from my TomTom 5 upgrade Application CD. If this occurs:
Make sure that the “temp“ folder on your desktop/laptop PC is empty before carrying out the installation. Use Start | Run. Type '%temp%' (no quotes) to open the “temp” folder. Delete all the contents. The installation utility should then run.
STEP 4
Memory problems are also likely if the whole application is installed in the PDA’s Main Memory. Therefore:
Install TomTom 5, and the ver. 5.1 upgrade, to STORAGE CARD (if not pre-installed), NOT to Main Memory or Internal Storage.
STEP 5 (Most, if not all, TomTom 5 copies whether on CD or a pre-installed SD card version)
The installation utility does not install the 7-digit postcodes completely. Therefore:
a) Make sure there is a folder entitled zip (name in lowercase) in the root directory of the storage card where TomTom 5 is located. Make sure that it contains a file entitled Great_Britain- (the 7-digit postcode file). If not, find where it is (use Filer Explorer) and move it there.
b) Make sure there is an EMPTY folder entitled tomtom (name in lowercase) in the root directory of the storage card where TomTom 5 is located. If there is not, then create one.
The 7-digit postcodes should then work. |
