Hey,

Does GPS work indoors? I parked my car in my garage, and have been trying to get it to work, but it has no reception. I was wondering if it actually works then? I did "lost" it at my friend's place, and don't know what he did to it.

Generally the GPS will not work in a garage, or indoors for that matter, they need a good clean line of sight to the sky. You sometimes find they will work indoors etc. but that will depend upon the type of receiver, and the actual roof construction - keep it outside (its OK through normal glass) but in a building is a general no - Mike

My Acer N35 with Destinator 3 works indoors, but only if im in the bedroom with the window open i can get at least 7 to 8 sat's but the signal does get lost then finds it again, so i agree with the other post, its best to keep it outside, and mine doesn't work in my garage either.

You will find that some SiRFstarIII based GPS will work in doors, most older GPS you will be lucky if you get a decent lock standing beside the window.

As others have said, as a general rule GPS receivers will NOT work indoors.

However it does really depend, I've found that if I'm in one of those warehouse type shops which typically have just a thin roof then I can get a signal lock.

However if you are in a multi-storey car park with many layers of concrete you've got no chance.

The only sure fire way to get a GPS signal inside a building is to put an aerial on the roof, and a replay station inside (even then it can be problematic due to reflections so its best left to the profesionals), not really viable for at home as they cost a small fortune - typically used by the military in aircraft hangars etc. - Mike
