has anyone ever managed to resolve the issues with no satellites being reported on the relevent section of the screen, despite navigation working perfectly ?

I'm using the same. Tom Tom supplied, wired GPS unit that came with my original TT2, but have stopped showing satellites since upgrading to TT5 (and 5.1, which I had hoped would resolve the issue).

Beyong advising a hard reset of my Ipaq and a clean install of TT (which I did to no avail) TT support really don't seem interested
Any help appreciated

this is listed in the "official" bug list on our site. As you said - no fix is expected any time soon, since it doesn't affect navigation too much.

It's to do with the NMEA strings (or the lack of) being output by your receiver required by TT5 to interpret the relevant satellite information.

There may be a fix: I believe Dave Burrows wrote an article sometime ago on how to enable the relevant string on some GPS receivers using Winavigator, which may do the trick. Do a search on the site.

There is a fix using Crux View, but it is only temporary as every time you disconect the power from the GPS receiver yuo lose the settings and have to do the fix again.

The answer is.....

Download Crux View - Free
Click on Open on GPS Status tab
Go to Protocol tab
Click on "Set NMEA Update Rate

You should now have satellites showing on the GPS Status tab and on TT5

it's not as easy as that. The NMEA specification allows for a listing of active satellites that is asynchronous from the listing of satellites in View. Some receivers emit it this way, others do it synchronously. TomTom seem to have cropped their GPS code to only accept one of the versions (this was different in TTN3).

The article I was referring to is here

Extract:
"Now one problem a lot of people experience is that you are receiving the total number of satellites you have a 3D fix on, but you are not seeing any satellite information for each satellite that would usually show signal strength. The reason for this would be that GPGSV isn't enabled as part of the NMEA string. You'll see this in the first screenshot below. If you exit TomTom GPS Status screen and then run up WinFast Navigator, connect to the GPS Receiver, then go into the COMMAND option and for this test we will make sure GSV is set at 5, then tap OK. What I would recommend is that you set GGA=1, GLL=0, GSA=5, GSV=5, RMC=1, VTG=1, MSS=0, User=0, User=0, User=0. When you tap the OK button, it should then enable it. Disconnect, run up your regular GPS program and check the satellite status now, you should now see satellite bars like in the second screenshot below."

Again, we have seen cases where GSV is enabled, and TomTom still can't list the number of sats. This is specific to the receiver used, and therefor some people may see the issue, some don't.
