Hi,
I'm going to france in a few weeks time on a motoring holoday and obviously I'd like to eas the navigation pain by taking along TTN2. Are separate maps availble to cover france ? I don't really want to purchase the whole of Europe as they wouldn't be used. Does TomTom have time limited country maps you could purchase for a week at a time ?
thanks,
Michael |

No - as I understand it, the only option is to buy the complete European maps package (or Navigator 2 France, which seems a pointless purchase if you already have Navigator 2 UK, as it won't be much cheaper than the European maps package).
Maybe one day maps from Maps On-Line will work in Navigator - but I think that's your only other option at present. You could activate Maps On-Line and experiment with it to see if it is of much use to you. It certainly won't do what Navigator will, though.
It would be good if short term licences or licences for individual extra countries were possible - but I guess that depends on TomTom's arrangements with the map data supplier.

You can actually purchase TomTom Navigator (France pack), which will be cheaper than the Europe bundle, you would probably have to uninstall the UK version and this might cause activation problems having two different countries on the same device. |

It is possible to purchase TTN2 France and just install the maps. TT themselves say you can do that. The French maps are quite big - 215Mb - so you will need a 256Mb card for the whole country. It is possible to install bits and pieces but then you cant navigate between them.
Another poss is to get the TT route planner, not as good as Navigator, but maybe OK for a one off holiday trip. |

You can't purchase the maps on their own, you have to buy the country version (which I was describing above) which includes both the maps and TomTom Navigator, but yes in theory it's possible. |

Just to explain - my thinking in pretty much dismissing buying Navigator 2 (France) was that the complete European maps package isn't much more than Navigator 2 (France) software only.
Buying the complete package covers you in the event you go to another European country at another time.
As Tony says, RoutePlanner Europe is another option - though whether it would be bearable after Navigator 2 is a little doubtful. It would be cheaper, though!

Can anyone tell me if you still have to switch country maps separately in Navigator 2 or is it possible to route from one country to another?
If not, has anyone any ideas of what other voice-navgation system would allow me to route from the UK cross France to Italy?
(My in-laws have got the urge to buy a GPS for this trip and they can't programme their video recorder - nightmare!) |

You do have to switch country maps. CoPilot will work in this manner, you can create a corridor of your journey which will work much better. |

Thanks Dave - You're too quick for me. I'd since come across your review of Navigator 2 that told me exactly what I needed to know and was going to "cancel" my question..... |
