Just come back from a trip to Stockholm. Whilst there I was using TomTom City Maps with my Emtac BT GPS unit.

In the UK I typically get reception of 6 satellites, at least 4 and often 8 or 9. In Stockholm I was lucky to get 4, often just 2 and never more than 5.

Is there any reason for this, (due to geography or whatever), or was I just unlucky?

The usual issue is if you're canyoning (eg driving/walking between tall buildings/foliage which block or rebounds the signals).

If you're out in the open with a complete view of the sky, then it could just be line of sight to the satellites wasn't quite as good or there was localised interference.

Richard,

I have had similar experiences but when travelling further South in Europe, and in the open.

I normally have 8-12 sats fixed in my car in the south of England. As we travelled further south through Europe into Italy the number of satellites dropped to 4-7.

There was no apparent reason for this, no obstructions, no tall buildings, no trees etc. The only possible reason was that we were further south and the view of the satellites was restricted.

This was not a one off occurrance, but happened throughout 2 weeks. As we returned home the number of sats fixed increased. I am no expert in the orbits of the GPS sats but it would suggest that their positioning and the curvature of the Earth doesnt allow all 12 to be visible in some areas.

This of course would not be the case with you as Stockholm is pretty much the same Latitude as the UK
