As expected Oncourse Navigator (which is the same software as Navigon 5) does not support TMC for the UK.

The biggest difference between Oncourse and Navigon is that Oncourse actually answer emails.

They have responded with:

---------------------------------------------------
The United Kingdom is not supported because TMC is not free in UK.

The system works just with free TMC. We are sorry that you cannot use the pay TMC stations i.e. UK.

The reason here is that the company which offers pay TMC wanted to have a crazy fee for the map information from every product which we would sale with UK map plus a yearly subscribtion fee from the customer who want to use TMC in UK.

That would mean you would have to pay a fee for the UK maps even if you do not want to use TMC in UK. Therefore we decided to go with out pay TMC"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I am still not sure why we cant have TMC on a PDA system from any supplier. Incar systems are using TMCRDS from ITIS, and TomTom is using data from ITIS. Surely the cost cant be greater for RDS/TMC than GPRS?

Clearly the manufacturers have to take a view on whether the additional costs that would be ocurred by having to pay the licence fee can be justified. At least in TomTom's version you can choose to subscribe but for TMC the manufacturer has to pay an up front licence which we'd all end up paying for in increased software costs regardless of how many actually use and subscribe to TMC.

Seems sensible - shame they couldn't be honest and tell people.

If this is the case I think it's unlikley they will ever provide UK TMC for V5

Agreed, at least the software companies should be upfront.

To this day, navigon still will sell you MN5 with TMC receive and British Map only, with TMC listed as a feature.

In addition the site states "In what countries is TMC reception possible?
The following countries currently offer TMC:" and then lists the Great Britain.

For people who "invested" in the TMC RDS hardware for MN4 are now left without an upgrade route, with the issue being ignored by Navigon.

Would it not be possible to produce two UK maps? One without TMC and one (more expensive) with TMC? Is this not what a number of car manufactuers have done?

Yes - that would be a better idea. Although I could see upgrading to TMC from a non TMC version would be an issue.

Unfortunatley I doubt if Navigon will survive now in the UK market as the majority of new units/systems will be offering TMC - it's becoming an expected feature.

Shame really as this producy had real potential.

What really annoys me is the lack of honesty about the abscence of TMC Angry this has been rolling around now for months - and their website is nothing short of a lie.
