|

I am about halfway through putting together a Point of Interest Database of England and Wales Youth Hostels. It's slow going converting all the postcodes to long and lats but I am getting there.
I am using a 2001 YHA handbook for the postcodes (can't seem to find this years) and I know that some hostels have closed and new ones opended in the last few years, so I will need to check things with the YHA Website to make sure my list is correct.
This is being done for my own personal use, but is there interest from other hostel users to make it publicaly available.
Hopefully once I've finished these hostels I will add the Scottish Hostels as well.

Hi Ash,
That sounds like a very good idea - good luck compiling the POI.
It's always a good idea to submit any POI to the website, as even if people don't think they need a certain POI at the moment, there may come a time when they think, "Oh, that would be useful now," and go along to the site to see if one exists.
Regards,
Bo Peep. _________________ TomTom 730

I see that the YHA website has OSGB grid references for the location of each hostel. These can easily be converted into lat/long for a POI database - have you tried emailing them to see if they have a list of the hostels and grid refs that you can convert? _________________ Gone fishing! |

Ash,
Try this.......
Posted: Tue Nov 16, 2004 4:54 pm Post subject: POIs for all UK business types
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello all
I have started to develop a new website at http://www.poidownload.co.uk which can generate POI lists for any UK business type.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They have details about youth hostels and the system will produce a complete list with lat+long details.
Good luck _________________ phily |

very impressed, this is a great website. You should look for sponsors as it's going to be a popular website. |

I totally agree with SGR, it looks to be a very useful site, Phily; well done.
Any chance of doing likewise for continental databases?? I'm looking for a good POI list of French campsites; trouble is there are over 10,000!!!!
In any case, thanks again for the UK version. _________________ Cheers, Doc L.

I know that now Phily, thanks. I've just had a very nice reply from him, in which he makes the following comment;
Quote: | . . . . . As for the French list, yes the technology could be expanded to search foreign databases. The tricky part would just be to find the data in the first place. We would need a french yellow pages type service where you could do a country-wide search on a particular category (i.e. without specifying a region). If you know of one then please let me know and I can look at expanding to include France & possibly other countries also.
Many thanks again for your feedback. | Sooo. ., if anyone, who may be based on the continent, knows of such databases (especially France please!!) which he could use in his 'POI generator' can you send him details to the e-mail address at the bottom of the front page of his site. Expanding this technology to other countries would be the best thing, for POI's, since sliced bready stuff, (and oldie's programs) IMHO.
Three cheers for Andrew _________________ Cheers, Doc L.

Thanks for the great feedback everyone. Happy to know that it's a useful service. :D I'm sure it will expand and grow rapidly - I've only recently got into "POI-ing" and find it all fascinating, I'm sure it's bound to take off in a major way and hopefully sites like poi download will make the technology as useful as possible.
Back to the continental thing - I realised after emailing you DocL that as well as the company directory, I'd of course need the list of postcode mappings for each country too. I'm sure all this info will be on the web somewhere or other, should be able to hunt it down if we work together...

Hi Andrew, forgive delayed reply.
The big database for campsites in France is http://www.campingfrance.com/. AFAIK they have the postcodes for each site, but it is divided up into regions.
As to 'mapping' the postcodes, I haven't a clue where you'd get that. Trouble is I think that French codes tend to cover a larger area than in UK and so would be less specific.
Don't know if SGR1913 knows; he's based in France I think.
I still think your Converter prog. is very, very useful and if it could be allied with any database, it would be the most brilliant thing since sliced bready stuff!! Looking forward to hearing of how the development of the program is going. Your efforts are appreciated by many, thanks. _________________ Cheers, Doc L.

One Question - where does the data come from?
Reason is there seems to be a few really obvious restaurants, takeaways and hotels missing from mylocal area.
is this something businesses need to subscribe to? _________________ Thanks,
