I'm looking for a GPS system that I'm going to use mostly for hiking off road but it would be great if I could get a system that is reasonable for in-car use. Could anyone recommend a really good GPS that combines the following:

Portability
Ruggedness/waterproof
Good off-road moving map detail (or software compatible)
Good battery life
In-car route plotting

I started off thinking about the Garmin GPSMAP 60CS (not compatible with OS map software), then PDA systems (not rugged enough or good enough battery life), then Navman ICN (possibly not compatible with OS detail??). It's a bit confusing. HELP...!

It's virtually impossible.
On road nagivation systems will be rubbish for hiking, and likewise hiking programmes suck in car.

The only thing you can get which will reasonably run both is a pda, but you've already rejected that option.

The only other way is to buy two different systems.

Not sure about the battery life thing, obviously depends how long you are hiking for, but you can buy 'ruggedized' PDAs like the ones TDS make:-

, or even a rugged case for a normal PDA like the Otterbox one on the Home page. Looks like the PDA's are a bit pricey though so you may prefer the case......
