BBC 1, 10 June 2003, around 1840 on, I think, the Cambridge (west) sub-opt only.
The piece was about a new taxi firm in Cambridge using the "latest in satellite technology" to try to shorten customer waits.
The main application was a job system that offered jobs to drivers using an application running on an XDA, hooked up over GPRS to the taxi office (piece from the controller about how it's better than analogue radio, which he described as very like CB radio).
Then it was said that "in car, the latest in satellite navigation is used" - and sure enough, the XDA was in a dash mount, with the familiar TomTom voice speaking!
You may be able to see the piece here later on this evening, though the link may not be the Cambridge (west) sub-opt and will therefore lack the piece I'm talking about. The URL, however, indicates I may be wrong and the programme may contain the piece - it's http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/realmedia/lookeast/cambs_tvbull.ram (RealPlayer required, programme will be replaced by the late night bulletin later tonight).

BBC News24 have been showing a preview snippet for their tech shows that includes a sample of the Navigator voice saying giving a turn instruction. The first two times I heard this I'd fallen asleep in front of the TV and woke up in a shock. Obviously my brain thought I'd fallen asleep driving. |

Its actually incredibly easy to fall asleep in front of bbc look east at anytime of the day or night.
I swear they have had the same presenter for the past 20 years - the content is mind blowingly tedious (hence a story on Cab firms using maps!) - just for a laugh they have a trip to a nudist beach ever year about now (just as our 2 week summer begins) and have a little laugh about it, then at Christmas they actually have a week of visits to houses covered in lights and have a bloody good chortle about this as well!
oh the joys of living in East Anglia!
