PostPosted: Fri Jul 15, 2005 1:03 am    Post subject: Question: GPS through laptop-bluetooth Reply with quote

Hello

My location is U.S. - California. I am considering a GPS device. My initial thought is to purchase a GPS receiver such as tom-tom, with bluetooth compatibility, and then to purchase some software that will make it possible to view the maps on my laptop computer while I am driving. My question is whether this will work on the laptop and which device(s) may be necessary to make it functional. Also, I wanted to know which devices you would recommend for this possibility, given the goal I have here. I look forward to your feedback!

True enough. Having pointed it out, couldn't you have offered a suggestion?

Devis, I have a Garmin GPS10. It comes with software for a PPC (Que) and for a PC (nRoute). The software is Garmin CitySelect and the North America version covers the whole of the US (inc Alaska and Hawaii), Canada and Puerto Rico. The Que and nRoute software are both in their relative infancy so there are no niceties such as 3D, POI proximity warning, etc., but I think it will be developed some more.

There are other options, none of which I've used.

No - not got a laptop so never looked into it. One question though, how many posts do I have to make to become an 'advanced' member? Laughing

Thank you everyone and especially, for your reply, Tim Buxton. That looks like a very nice device you've got! (well... a Moderator says he owns and uses one... must be good, no? ;) )
What if we were to compare in a matter car-navigation performance your Garmin GPS10 to:

1) Fortuna Clip-on
2) TomTom BGP-2000
3) Leadtek™ Bluetooth 9553 Mini

I understand that it may look like I'm too demanding and for some it would be easier to say "go look up the articles and the numbers and figure out yourself!", but me (a newbster) judging about such sophisticaited devices can do much worse then people that practicly breather accoring to their GPS readings Smile

And I appologize for the post appearing several times in the forum - I was trying to hit the damn Post button and it wouldn't work... but I guess it did in the end :P Again, sorry.

On a sidenote - do you think your Garmin GPS10 would have software for Europe and especially Eastern Europe (for example, former USSR). I intend on travelling there for business and having the same kit (Laptop + software + GPS receiver) would be of great help.

Again, thank you everyone looking through this topic, even if you leave comments that are off-topic.

Garmin themsevles don't have products for Eastern Europe, but they do have Third Party Developers who make some. You can look here. They probably aren't cheap though. The European maps from Garmin come with Western Europe and, in lesser detail, the Czech Republic. Anything further east will come from a third party.
