I've seen several posts detailing this problem or similar (mostly with IPAQ 2210) but I haven't seen a definitive solution that is meant to work.
Apologies if I've missed the post containing the answer, but I'll re-state the problem anyway.
Here's the setup:
IPAQ 3870
Pocket PC 2002
Globalsat BT-338 GPS Bluetooth Receiver
Tom Tom Navigator 3.07
512 MB Kingston Secure Digital (not high speed)
The problem is that after a clean install of Tom Tom, using the GB map (104 MB) installed on the SD card, it locks up anywhere between 5 mins and 20 mins while driving around. Repeatedly. By lock up, I mean the Bluetooth connection drops and the arrow on the map gets anchored in the one position. After the freeze happens, the display switches to show speed in mph, which is stuck on whatever speed you were doing when it froze. Although Tom Tom still responds, you have to reset the IPAQ to get it all going again, which is not very practical while driving.
The problem never happens while you are stationary. I also tried installing one of the small 16 MB maps onto internal memory and confirmed that I got no lock ups.
Therefore it seems the reason for this, as is indicated in previous posts, is the access to the map on the SD card being too slow. As the map data is streamed from the card, the processor gets overloaded and it drops the Bluetooth connection. OK, the problem is seemingly understood but what is the solution?
Before I go and buy a Hi-Speed SD card, does anyone know if this is likely to solve it? How Hi-Speed does it need to be? The reason I'm unsure is that there are some statements being made that the 3870 can't take advantage of hi-speed cards because of its inferior SD card interface. Yet there are other reports that using a hi-speed SD card has eliminated lock ups in some cases (not necessarily on a 3870 though).
Or, if I upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003, will it perform better? Is it meant to have better Bluetooth drivers and/or better SD drivers?
I've already done a hard reset, formatted SD card with FlashFormat and done a clean install of Tom Tom with no improvements. I tried disabling POIs on the map with no improvements. I tried going back to earlier versions of the GPS driver and still no improvements.
I know there must be a solution because I've seen a few posts from people saying that they have Tom Tom working no problem on a 3870, so I'd be really interested to know their exact setup to get it working. I don't want to have to buy a new iPAQ
