You can get GPS hard wired to your cars ignition, TomTom used to come supplied with the hard wiring cables but not anymore. With the integration of Sirf 3 you can get a sat lock from a lot of hidden places in the car so you could hide the GPS receiver if that is what you are looking for.

I'm not too sure that was what I was looking for,,,,
I have a Mio-168 and it comes with an external antenna but the idea is to stick it on the roof with the magnet and poke the wire through the window!! Surely new cars come with external antennas that are fixed??? They must be available???

Thanks

Andy

I run the external wire around the door rubber, from the B pillar to the dash, and looks very neat

Hi Andy_,

I think you are the exception to most people. People prefer not to permanently attach objects to the exterior of their car which is why the Magnetic external antennae are so popular. You could of course permanently fix the external antenna, no need to simply rely on its magnet. Permanent fixes are available but more expensive and not so freely available.

I think Steven's point was that with the SiRF III chipset there is less need for external antennae.

DavidHobbs,

You can look through the list of VSiB list for a local mechanic who is qualified to install it for you:

Hope this helps

Thanks Jonathon,,

I just can't be doing with wires on show and the thought of a length of coax going through the door makes me cringe!!

What do the new cars have that come with GPS as standard?? They must have an external roof mounted antenna??

The late BMWs have a weird looking thing on the rear of the roof,, is that one??

PS,, even the cigarette lighter adapter is starting to get to me :-)

There are some real fussy people out here!!!!! ;-)

If you want a permenant roof mounted GPS unit check out the following link
http://www.garmin.com/products/gps35/

I have been using one of these mounted onto my Volvo roof for the past 18 months, it not to easy to route the cables through the roof liner and you have to make of the connectors in situe. but from the inside - no cables or accesories visable. It withstands the car wash, and the monkies at the safari park. You need to make sure that the model is compatable with the voltage of you your vehicle - there was one on e-bay a couple of month ago it went for under £20 - Mike

Seems all a bit much when you could get a Sirf III BT GPS and place discreetly in the car and charge where necessary. If there is a fault with the unit which I would not wish to happen then you might have to pull the cable back out and risk causing damage to your car but I suppose different strokes for different folks.

I fully agree it is alot of messing around, and considering I use an Altina Bluetooth unit in the car the roof mounted unit does not connect to the PDA at all. It is connected to the in built computer system which records vehicle speed, position etc. It also gives speed feedback to the cruse control / speed limit system. A bit of an unusual home built system in the old Volvo - but it will never get stolen, not to easy to drive / work out compared to a normal car

hmm all of that so you can track your wife’s position? Only joking but I can see why you have it if its constantly giving feedback on location. There are a lot of mobile devices that do that now like:
