When I first registered TT3 I obtained a device code during the process, and stored it, with product and activation codes, on the TomTom web site.
When I did the same thing with TT5, the device code was slightly different (even though it is the same PDA) I thought device codes were generated by the PDA, and I'm puzzled why they should be different

Recently I attended the MEDC at Microsoft HQ at Reading and the point about the UUID (Unique Device Identifier) arose in the miting.

The explanation we were given was that the number can be retrieved by programs (well known by programmers) but the code retrieved is not the real one recorded in one chip of the machine if not a encryption of it to avoid machines been flashed with different numbers (in relation with stolen machines and fight about tefth).

In the same way when programmers retrieve that number it is usually encrypted again, to give some headache to crackers and pirates, otherwise it will be very easy to know it. That's why a company can change its encryption algorithm easily when the older was pirated and that's surely what TomTom made.
