I used my navman icn510 to avoid the congestion charge area the other day. I got a ticket today for a fifty quid penalty. Two points may be worth noting. Firstly that the Navman uses the same maps as Tomtom which may mean that tomtom users will get caught as well. The second point to note is that I didn't even realise I'd gone into the area so the road markings must be fading or something as I'm usually quite careful about watching out for the notices.

Given that the congestion charge is essentially a scam designed to catch and penalise motorists rather than prevent congestion it is probably best not to rely on these gps units to guide you around it. Another interesting thing I found out is that though the phoneline tells you it is being manned by Transport For London it is in fact being manned by Capita. Why they feel it necessary to deceive people ringing in about their identity is a bit of a mystery but I was a bit worried to think that I might just have given my credit card details to some person in a call centre in Bangladesh or Calcutta or some other such place and those details might be getting flogged for a few dollars to fraudsters in a similar fashion to the story in the papers today about someone selling peoples bank account details in India.

Silly questions perhaps, but did you have a tick in the "Avoid Toll Roads" box and did you have a route set?
