hi

can any tell me ,if i buy tomtom 5 for my mda 3 pocket pc will it have ( or have an option to upgrade to ) maps for use in central / eastern europe ?

if the maps are included (or available as a upgrade ) has anyone used them ?

im planning a trip across europe down to the black sea coast of bulgaria in august & would be a lot happier if i had sat nav guiding me through unfamiliar countries.

all input is welcome , i have used the search function but cant find any solid info re tt5 for ppc & maps of this region.

thanks

mark

Current coverage is only to Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The other maps will probably be made available next year. Until then you'll have to find alternative solutions.

Hi Satmark,

I have done the same route that you are intending to do, infact 3 times, and will be doing the same in a couple of weeks.

Anyway to answer your question no there is no PPC mapping on the market yet , but if you want to spend about £900 you can get a complete solution, found mostly in mercs, DVD solutions.

But trust me there are lies, and there are dam lies and there are maps!, to give you a run down, Navman does not do what it states on the tin, it will loop you all around the place ( loops being 30 kils) in all sorts of countries Germany being the worst, Tomtom is NO better, these are kindly noted to as small "bugs", being that the guys who test these maps have never found their way back to correct them. ( in short nobody tests them ), come to think of It has anybody on this site road tested mapping ... and I am not talking about going to Brighton.

You can use a laptop and a GPS mouse, ( I did ),once you get off range of a PPC, but trust me all PC mapping that exists is way out of whack in a lot of places, and new roads are not included, just because it's 2005 means nothing the mapping could be 1990. I got to where I was going because I can speak a bit of the lingo, remember sign posts hardly exist over there, ( see long way round :-) )

And a final thing its a dangerous journey, try flying its far cheaper and safer,I only drive as I have to do busines. And a final note if your car gets stolen they will not let you out of the country :-).

As a matter of interest where on the coast are you going ?

Regards

hi eurothug

the route im thinking of going cardiff - m25- dover-dunquirke-Vienna-Budapest-Belgrade-Sofia-sunny beach.

what do you think of going this route ?

in what way is it unsafe ? ,(im taking my wife & kids )

i usually fly but im going this time for month & i'll need my tools & ladders ,so we are going in my van.

my place is in sunny beach ,near bourgas.

Hi Satmark,

The route looks easy on the map... but reality its hell... I know borgy and sunny, the journey will take you a very very long time( 3 to 4 days ), if you tot up what you will spend on on the way on BB's and what ever, never mind putting up 5,000 kils ( 2 way), on your Van , you can buy all your tools and ladders for much less than you will spend on the journey over there, you will also pay tax on entry too. And traffic delays of 8 hours are quite common in August, hope your van has air conditioning.. :-)

There are 3 routes used, to go there by car, each one is a very long haul, and I have yet to see a GPS help you out with a break down :-).

And not wanting to start a flame war. and I do not want to go into horror stories. but there is no way I would take a wife and kids on this journey ..its not for the faint hearted . As I said I do business on the way and over there, but for pleasure .. I fly .. its about 3 hours ..versus 3 days drive.. well thats a no brainer.. :-), but you never know you could get your ladder over there by air frieght.

Laughing

Anyway if It any use to you as far as I know mapping software for eastern europe will be out at the end of summer, but that does not mean it will be accurate..
