Just bought a Navman ICN 510 to help me with directions while scouting around the communities as i'm relocating my family to Florida soon. This is my first ever GPS and i'm really not sure whether my problem with this unit is user fault or the GPS's. I tried it for the first time when I went to work. So I typed in the exact work address and press go, it took awhile to recieve a signal. I oftentimes get a "NMEA Error" and have to wait like 3 minutes or so until it began to guide me what route to take based on my current location. The route was an easy one. From my house, left to
the main street, exit to parkway, exit to main road, place of work is a hospital. For a couple of times, it guided me to take a different route and would give instructions to turn left, bear on left, etc...
So I cancelled the route it plotted, re-entered the address and this time seems to be correct in guiding me to my destination. But what troubles me is that the voice prompt would be telling me that I should turn or exit now and that i'm still a good 10 blocks away from the nearest exit. Then it tells me that I have reached my destination when i'm actually just halfway through. The map shows accurately where i'm travelling, at what point I am on the freeway but after the voice prompt says I have reached my destination, it just stops prompting and does not automatically re-route. I thought i'm driving too slow for this unit. It really bothers me that it is inconsistent and inaccurate.
I checked the settings and all, even got automatic re-routing checked on. I loaded the New York State and Florida maps on a 256 meg SD card and updated the software using the Patcher80.exe I downloaded from the Navman website. I still have 14 days to return or replace it if defective. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only "early" voice commands I get are "prepare to ....", which is given about 2km before the event, and "continue 20km" when I'm on a leg which is over 20km long.

It sounds like you need to read the manual a bit more. Not being sarcastic. I think you might have the demo route switched on in the settings in which case it would tell you that you have arrived at your destination before you actually do.
Don't panic about most people including me had problems but as long as your unit is working ok, stick with it. It will be fine once you get the settings right, and that takes trial and error and most of all experimentation.

Why not try the setting for roads at the bottom of my post (SIG)

Yeah I know... RTFM Smile
I just did and you're right. I was in demo mode. Checking it off in the settings menu did the trick. Working like a charm now.
I still get the NMEA Error though when I first turn it on. Should I be concerned about that?
Thanks so much for your help and I will try out your settings.

Glad you got it sorted, as for the NMEA problem.....
This bit concerns me a little. (and updated the software using the Patcher80.exe I downloaded from the Navman website) I did this with my first unit that i had exchange, BUT i'm not sure if that was the problem, although the unit did work exceptionally well until i did that patch.
It might be worth a call to Navman Support, just to ask about it.

Any other settings your not sure about or would like to try, pm me and i'll tell you what I use personally. Then you can fine tune the unit to your own likings. (took me about a month before I was totally happy with all my settings)

Did you get a remote control.

(I just got a remote and what a difference)
