|
|
One of the best features for me in Tomtom3 is the ability in the map view to reset the GPS to current location,
I use the UK map a lot and then go to work in Los Angeles, once there load the US Map and just click on the map and select reset GPS to this position, that way the GPS locks within 30secs to 1Min, unlike the 45mins it can take if it has to do a full unknown location search
I can't belieive this feature is missing from TT5!!! (Unless I have missed it and someone else has found it), but I don't think I missed it, Really useful feature that needs to be there in some form!

I think you are the only person in the world who found that feature useful. TomTom have cut many more, much more used features in TTN5
As for the 45 minutes TTFF - this is more down to your GPS receiver. Contemporary receivers manage to get all the base data within 12 minutes, and some even seem to do dirty tricks and get a fix even faster. _________________ Lutz

I doubt "I am the only person"
anyone who travels around the US on business like I do and use hire cars at airports will be used to the fact that it can take an age to relock if you are more than a few hundred miles from where the unit was last used,
And to be honest even 10 to 15 mins waiting in a carpark for a lock when with the reset gps to current location gave an instant lock is a real pain!

I said "I think"... (To give you credit - very few users actually understand what this function does.)
Anyhow, I am regularly traveling across the US and to Europe. I never had the issue you describe, because as soon as I leave the plane I switch the receiver on, and it takes way more than 12 minutes to get to the car park... plenty of time for the receiver to get its act together. _________________ Lutz

Hi Lutz
I use an all in one PDA/GPS unit (Less items to forget and leave in the Rental Cars), although I still manage to leave Charger leads behind!
I will give it a go next week and see if it can get a lock between LAX terminal and arriving at the car rental terminal..
Just find it annoying that "Upgrades" remove useful features, and I agree with you there are other useful items that are missing as well,
I have not got my US Map set from TomTom yet so hope they are an improvement over the last set for the US, Don't suppose you know if they have improved the POI set on the new maps, the first set had a good set of stores so you could find malls easily the update they issued had the individual stores set removed, was hoping they were back again in this set,
Cheers

LAX? That's the worst. You can invade three small countries in the time it takes you to get to the rental car places from there.
Give me some places and I can look the POIs up for you. Don't cultivate too many hopes though - I couldn't see much difference from the previous map version. _________________ Lutz

Hi Lutz
Its not the places so much I am missing, its POIs
In the fiorst map release you could search on stores (It was not complete for all states), but for example if you went to stores and searched for say Disney Store, that would give you a list of the half decent Malls in the area,
But in the last release that sectno was removed totally from the POIs, I was just hoping that was back in
Unless there is a better way of finding a Half decent mall when on the road in an area you don't know
As for getting thru LAX, its's not too bad when the INSPASS machines are working, (And even when they are not if you go to them and they are out of order it gets you to jump the q to the first available ImiOfficer. Call me a sadist but I prefer LAX to a lot of West Coast Tarmac.
Cheers
