Trying to work out if I am better to return my Tom Tom BT Nav v3 and buy the new V5 BT Navigator pack when it comes out but it will cost me roughly £30 more overall (assuming the upgrad from v3 is 79Euros and this includes maps)

Only real advantage I can see from this would be having the new BT unit itself. Not knowing much about chipsets and GPS in the first place is there really much difference between the old and new units?

What are the common probs with the original unit I keep hearing about (but can never actually find mentioned).

Cheers

The difference in chipset performance is huge, especially for dense foliage and urban canyons. See our BT-338 review.

The original Leadtek, phew, TomTom BT suffered from sudden death syndromes where the red light would stay on and the receiver wouldn't respond any more. It must have been one specific (large) batch since more recently there were far less occurences that were reported.

I still have one of the "old" receivers and despite regular use it seems to hold on fine. But it has no chance when compared to the GlobalSat BT-338.

Huge difference huh?

Well that probably setlles it then - I want to use this set up for walking about town and already have had a few problems with the GPS in my pocket and have noticed that the new one seems to advertise its use for in the pocket...

Ahwell - looks like another shop front arguement and a lot of web surfing to find the best prices now. (notice the new TT BT seems to be about £40 more than the old version)

Will they also be updating the wired receiver?

good question. but I would not think they'll bring out new wired receivers any more. Time will tell.
