Garmin and third party mapping - HELP PLS

Well, I was on my way to buy an HP Ipaq and TomTom for my European driving when I discovered this thing called "third party" produced maps. All of a sudden I am discovering that Garmin has a number of people making software maps for regions not yet covered by the mainline companies. For example, Croatia, Slovenia, Czech etc. Problem is, it appears that Garmin is the only one these people are making this software for. After struggling with the TomTom decision, now I am faced with this. Can anyone tell me how much I would be giving up if I switched from the TomTom system for this PDA I am about to purchase to the Garmin GPS based system? I am out of time but would hate to go right when I should go left. I love the idea of more maps but don't want to be stuck with an inferior product for the rest of Europe.
