After 2+ years of satisfied use of my EMTAC GPSJACKET, I am considering a change to a wired setup with say a Holux GR-211 GPS Mouse.

My main 'problem' with the EMTAC results from my lack of everyday useage of the system, since in the main this comprises of local driving where there is no need for navigation. When it is required, it can take a while to establish a fix, particularly if the backup battery in the sleeve has run down from lack of use. When used regularly there is no problem.

My question is, assuming a GPS mouse is powered, does it also require to be connected to the PDA in order to achieve 3D fixes? If it can function independantly I assume it can also store information via a backup cell? Hopefuly, this would mean that the receiver would always (assuming the car is driven daily) be in a 'warm' state for when the PDA is connected for navigation?

Would there be an advantage in hard wiring the power to the GPS mouse so that it was always powered, even with ignition off, as I understand that this is the case for dedicated built-in systems? Are these type of units able to survive full time power on?

Thanks

For the vast majority of GPS Mice the location data is stored on-board and maintained when power is not applied using a backup battery.

If the GPS Mouse is connected to power it will obtain a fix independent of whether a PDA is connected to it or not. This obviosly greatly speeds up the location aquisition for you because in practice as soon as you connect your PDA you have a position fix.

Thanks for the swift (as ever) response to my questions. Smile That clarifies things nicely.

I assume, that in view of the backup battery, there is little relevance in maintaining power to the GPS Mouse whilst the vehicle is not being driven.

Regards

It might make a difference but in practice it would be very small. In my install, I get in, switcth the ignition ON and insert my PDA into the cradle. By this time the GPS already has a fix so as soon as TomTom is started it is showing my position and is ready to navigate Smile
