I am a new TomTom user running it on a Palm T3. Last week, on my first longish journey, TomTom refused to take me on a Ring Road around Bristol.. Indeed it was the right route (mathmatically speaking) as the Route which TomTom choose was the shortest. But having local knowledge I head down the ring road instead.. At every roundabout, it wanted me to go right, which still made sense as it was trying to take me on the shorted route.

I put this down to the way that TomTom works and looked forwards to v5 where I understand I can ask it to prioritise which type of roads to use.

Yesterday, I did exactly the same route and this time, to my surprise, it took me down the ring road instead.

Does TomTom 'learn' about your driving habits or about a particular route, or is this just a random phenominon??

Any info on this would be appreicated

No, it doesn't learn. But under properties, there are 3 types of route calculation which you can choose, Fast, Normal or Strict. Perhaps this was changed between your journeys? Or perhaps you changed the speeds for the different types of road?

I don't think that thats true for the Palm version. On the Palm (As far as I know) there is no way to change the route properties.

This to me is a MAJOR oversight for a navigation system as I would atleast expect to be able to choose "quickest" or "shortest". I understand that this feature is in Version 5!

The palm version should always select the fastest route. This has been changed in version 5 ( which should be available for the Palm soon) whereby you can select the type of route you prefer Shortest, fastest etc. You will not be able to adjust the speed profile of the roads to suit your driving style though.

Thats OK.. I am more than happy being able to say "Shortest" or "Quickest" in V5.

But this still doesn't make sense.. If the Palm version always chooses the fastest route, then why would it take me on 'Urban' roads one day (Which is the shortest) and then on Dual Carrageways next the next (Which is quickest), unless it had learned something?

you may have started to calculate the route from a different starting point.

On my home from work if I navigate to home from the office door it takes me home one way. If I navigate to home from the supermarket 500 yards from my office (and on the origional route) it takes me a slightly different way - using a 1 mile shortcut of B road to save me about 3 minutes.

Never worked it out.....but it does this consistently.
