How do you use the 'Alternate Route' function in TT3? I've got it to plan a route and then I hit the 'Alternate' button and off it goes searching roads again... but then it just seems to get down to 0.0 miles and just sits there. Eventually it will get back to the navigate screen and have exactly the same map as the original! Has anyone got this to work? I thought it was supposed to give you a list of alternatives?

Secondally, what is the difference between 'Destination' and 'Drive-by' in the itinerary mode? As far as I can see you can add several destinations so I can't see what the difference is. I did think that if you added a drive-by but then decided to take a detour it might try to route you back to the destination and allow you to skip the drive-by but this doesn't seem to be the case - it tries to route you back to the drive-by.

Finally (sorry for all the questions!), is there a quick way to jump to the current location when in 'map' view? I know you can jump to favourite locations etc but cannot find an easy way to jump to the current gps position.

Thanks a lot!

A driveby differs in that it does not announce "you have reached your destination",however depending on your settings will play a sound, a destination does announce it.

Alternative routes is usually used if you have avoided a particular road. If you have no avoids, it will still send you on the same route.

The "alternate routes" function is used from Map view/tools/alternate routes and is used if you don't like the one that has been planned for you! The "ALTERNATIVE ROUTES " button is something I only really discovered last weekend..and only sems to work when the gps has your current possition..When pressed is opens another screen with "Original" "Alternative" (usefull if you have take a wrong turn and tt3 insists on directing you back to your original route even though there is a better way) "Avoid Roadblock" . (The" Avoid Roadblock" button give a list of distances to avoid the road you are on after which you are directed back to your original route

Choosing destination or drive-by also affects the time to/distance to destination values shown on screen. So if your itinerary consists of two destinations, the figures relate to the first destination until you pass it, then to the final destination. But if it consists of a drive-by then a destination, the figures relate to the final destination throughout the journey.

To show the current GPS position in Map view, tap the GPS fix symbol at the top right of the screen (the bars and number). The map will snap to that position.

Or to have Map view always showing the current GPS position, tick the relevant option in the Properties screen (it is obvious, I just don't have TomTom in front of me right now to check its name). This can be handy if you just want to drive along with a "North Up" moving map with street names showing, but be warned that you don't get any navigation voice instructions. It also means the map always snaps to the current GPS position, even when you're trying to look at any other position on the map, so you'll soon find yourself turning it off again if you like using the map to find locations.

Thanks for the replies, that clears that lot up.

I did make a mistake, it was in fact the 'Alternative Routes' function that I couldn't get to work, not the 'Alternate Route'. I might not have had a gps lock when I tried it though.

Thanks again.

In answer to this the 'Alternative Route' function does now work for me - you need to actually be up and running on your route for it to work. I was trying before I'd started driving and it doesn't work (even though I had a GPS lock). 'Alternate Route' from the map screen always seems to work.
