Hi all
Ihave ttn3 hp 2210 tom tom car kit and tom tom gps wired
i have lost the power cable that came with it from new and I have had a new one made
to hard wire it.
Now i wonder if the reduction from 12v to 5 v takes place in the cradle or the cig lighter plug or both.
Can anyone advise me for sure, I should hate to fry my 2210
many thanks

the reduction happens in the cig lighter plug. Do NOT connect 12V to the cradle. _________________ Lutz

Hi, Marshall
I am pretty sure that the HP accepts a 5V input.
Firstly, they like to make the PDA as light as possible, so any poer conversion will be outside the PDA
Secondly, if you have a USB port cable to charge your PDA, then it is 5V - the USB ports give out 5V power. |

Any cable connected to a cig lighter plug will power the cradle, as I've found. However I'm not sure about connecting it directly |

hi all
Thanks for the replies.
I thought the lead that came with the tomtom car kit was just a pair of wires at one end which connected to a 12v supply and the other end had
a power input to the car mount .
Have I got this all wrong ? or did i NOT get a lead with the tomtom car kit?
if I did not get a lead how can i hard wire it??????
regards

I had my cigarette lighter adapter connected hidden from view - one side to the ignition circuits, the other to my PDA and GPS mouse.
This plug is out of site behind the cigarette lighter socket. |

Look on the back of the TomTom car kit cradle and you should see a white label. If it is like the one I have for the XDA it says 12/24v ie it can accept either as it has it's own built in circuit board to reduce the voltage to 5v for the PDA.
Mine came with 2 power leads, one to plug into the cigar lighter socket the other was a longer cable with 2 bare wires on the end. That was the one I usesed. It is connected to a live feed under the dash via a 2 amp inline fuse and a switch so I can switch it off if the car is parked up for a week or so. You could also power it from a live feed via the ignition. _________________ Graham.

Just so my profile doen't confuse you my original XDA used the TomTom car kit, but had to change to a Seidio when I upgraded to the XDA 2 which is slightly different in physical dimensions and wouldn't fit the TomTom cradle. _________________ Graham.

Hi xda,
I've asked this question dozens of times but haven't got a straight answer off anyone .
You say you run the cable to a live feed 'under the dash', my question is, how did you get the cable from where the car kit is located, to where the power supply is located? Is there some secret way to feed it through somewhere, or did it involve drilling holes in the dashboard? |

No holes drilled, GPS sits on top of dashboard in the centre close up against the windscreen, it's cable is tucked down out of sight between the dash and the screen and runs around to the right hand side, and plugs into the car mount. The excess cable is fed down a gap at the end of the dash into a compartment underneath which has a removeable cover.
Inside this compartment are all the plugs and sockets that feed the instruments, igniton, lights etc. The car kit power supply was spliced into the main ignition feed, then back up the gap and pluged into the mount. _________________ Graham.

You can safely connect your new cable directly to a 12v or 24v supply, the voltage conversion is handled by the cradle not the cigar jack.
It is essential however that you ensure the centre of the cradle plug is +ive and the outer is -ive as reversing the polarity will cause damage to the cradle. _________________ Standard issue : 2210 & TTN3 kit |

Hi all again
sorry for not answering earlier but have been away from home.
I'm glad my problem seems to be solved, I have checked the back of my mount and your correct
the label reads 12 or 24v also i checked the end of the cigar lighter lead when plugged in, I checked it on the 10v scale and the needle flashed well over full scale deflection so it is obviously not supplying 5v.
so all i have to do is fuse and switch it and it should be alright
once again thanks for all your help
regards :P
