Medion MD 40600 Port problems

After a year of excellent service, I am now having problems with my Medion MD 40600. The GPS status alternates between red GPS ? for 90% of the time and green GPS 8 for the other 10%. I have checked all the plug in connections.

I loaded Winfast Navigator version CE 1.0 which showed the port as COM1, 9600 Baud. Selecting Tools – Port settings, I get a box saying ERROR, Couldn’t find value – OK. Each tap of OK bring up the same message until the 3rd tap when it shows the port details. On changing the Baud rate to 4800, which I understand are the settings required, I find the signal level screen and Development screen show no data being received. Changing the Baud rate back to 9600, everything seems OK. I was going to switch on the GSA and RMC sentences in preparation for upgrading to Navigon 4 in the future but find these are already activated. On loading Navtec again, I receive data intermittently as before.

I have removed the battery and switched off the backup battery then reinstalled just the Navtec software. This makes no difference. The 3 times error messages on the Port setting is reproducible. I can find no way of changing the default COM1 setting to 9600 Baud through Windows or Navtec to give it a try. Can anyone suggest what may have happened and offer any help please?
