hi - i have a geko 201 which i use when walking and sometimes hook up to my laptop for use with autoroute 2005 and it all works fine - but the laptop was bit bulky so i have treated myself to an Acer N30 PDA - and after using the same set up on the 201 and setting the PDA to com port 1, i'm having a bit of a problem in that the PDA is not receiving any data from the Geko 201.

The PDA takes serial connection and is showing com port 1 and the 201 is set for NMEA - software is Pocket Streets from autoroute 2005 - though i'm hoping to move over to tom tom 3 software shortly.

Any ideas as to what i'm doing wrong

The Baud rate is set to 4800, right? And the Geko is sending NMEA data?

Geko is set for NMEA and 4800 baud rate - what I can check is the baud rate of the N30 - I have sent a note to Acer asking them for infoormation on this

The Acer will accept whatever you set in your program (as long as it is betwee 1200 and 115000 (or so)

Any other software blocking the COM port? Keyboard driver? Infrared beam?

Are you sure the cables are OK?
May be the problem is with the software.

Try com 0, if there is one. Tom Tom definitely use UART 0.

checked the PDA and disabled the infrared port but still no data - one point to mention - i'm using an Acer serial cable which has the special Acer connection on one end and a femal serial on the other but the 201 cable also has a femal serial cable connector - I simply connected them using a serial male to male cable (straigh through no crossover) - i dont think this is the problem but any ideas

You need a null modem adapter between the 2 serial cables.
A mere gender changer will not do.

While you are waiting for that, there is one simple, temporary solution you can make it work.

Get 3 suitable wires and bridge the serial cables (insert them into cable holes) this way:

2>3
3>2
5>5

It should work.

pin 2 is the one next to 1 !
And 3 is next to 2 (in the middle of 5)
And you know which is 5.
