Hi i'm new to GPS and am considering my first system based on my ipaq 3795.
I will use the system to navigate to locations off the beaten track which are not on roads or foot paths. I will need to use the system in the car as well as on foot.
I need to be able to store many locations to navigate back to. I also may need to enter grid references.
On the hardware side I am not sure whether to go for a sleeve type or BT reciever. Any sugestions on this subject would be most welcome.
My ipaq only has one memory slot that is the size of a postage stamp and I am not sure which type of memory to buy.

Any help or sugestions would be appreciated.

Kevin

Can you check you model number? I think it's more likely to be a 3975 than a 3795.

If it's a 3975 then a sleeve GPS receiver will fit it and it also has BT built in. The memory slot is an SD slot which, unsurprisingly, takes SD cards.

A sleeve will provide a slightly more portable system, but on the downside it uses the iPAQs battery for power and positioining in-car is more critical.

A BT Receiver will mean carrying two bits of kit around when you're on foot but as it uses its own batteries for power, the iPAQ will last longer. Also the BT unit can be positioned in a prime spot for reception whilst the iPAQ can be better positioned for your viewing as it won't need a view of the sky.

Tim,

You are correct, the ipaq is the 3975 , not 3795.

I notice you use a Garmin GPS V and a Navman sleeve. I assume this is because the Navman is not suitable for off road locations, in which case would a handheld be more suitable for my off road needs?

If on the other hand a sleeve or BT receiver were suitable, would i require different maps to the ones suplied by Tomtom or Copilot?

Thanks

Kevin

I have the same question as Kev4c but with a different PPC. I have a Dell Axim X5 with a compact flash slot. On my unit under connections, it does show the bluetooth icon. I called Dell on several occasion, I get various answers saying it was and then the next time, it doesn't have the blue tooth technology. Can someone confirm this with me, if I do or don't?

I will be using the GPS system to navigate on and off the road so I will need to have a unit that allows me this flexibility. I will need to store various locations and enter grid coordinates.

For my memory I have 512 SD card. I hope this is enough, if not, please let me know.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Have a look Here . It say's that the X5 does not have BT. However it also say's that my Axim X3i doesn't have BT.. IT DOES.

I think a good indication is that your X5 has the BT icon. What happens if you tap on it.. can you 'turn on BT' (does a LED come on somewhere on the unit) and can you see the 'BT Manager' when you tap the icon?

It 'may' also be dependent on where you purchased your X5. I have heard lots of US customers mention that there X3i model does not have BT, as I say, my European (UK) model definitely does.

Usually the Dell sales invoice or confirmation e-mail mentions the units specs... do you still have those?.

Thank you for the link.

It shows that I don't have the BT. I've purchased my Dell Axim X 5 directly from Dell. I better stick with the CF for now but get a unit that allows me to upgrade or can I?

I double click the icon and it is all grayed out but I do not have a GPS unit yet still deciding which one to get still, any suggestions?

I purchased my unit over 2 years so invoice or email confirmation is no where to be found. Sad

Ah well Gizmo, shame there is no BT, but it seems strange that you have the icon. My wifes Axim which doesn't have BT does not show an icon.

I'm new here and to gps, so hopefully someone else will answer your other questions. If you really wanted BT, I guess you could get a BT/CF card to give you BT function on your X5, but then what about additional storage if the BT card is using the only storage slot (or does the X5 have two slots?).

Best to wait for the the knowledgeable guys to answer. Good luck.

Kevin,

My ownership of the Garmin is historical. I was planning a trip to Europe by motorbike, with a friend. He already had a Garmin GPS III and were were trying to do the trip 'paper-free' as far as we could. When I bought my first Garmin in 2000, it was because Steve already had one and I'd used my (ex) brother in law's GPS II and knew the basics of getting it to work for me. I got a GPS III+ which was identical to the III except that it had a whopping(!) 1.44Mb of memory in which to upload maps from my PC.

At that time I didn't even know what a PDA was, let alone the GPS capabilities which were probably in their infancy at thet time.

Anyway, Steve and I did all the plotting using Autoroute's Location Sensor function to find coordinates for turns, which way we needed to turn, which roundabout exit to take, etc., and the trip was a success, with maybe two wrong turns taken in 2000 miles of riding. It was easier to get the same GPS as Steve as we could then ensure that we both had the same routes loaded and if one of us had failed to notice an upcoming turn, the other was likely to have spotted it.

When I got my first PDA, I bought a Navman sleeve because the company were based two miles from my house, and I thought that if I had any problems I'd just be able to pop in and see them! Naīve or what?

I still used the Garmin on my bike as I could take 12V straight off the battery to power it, whereas the iPAQ needed 5V which would need its own power lead taken from a cigar lighter or similar. I upgraded to the GPS V because it has 17Mb of map memory available and supports automatic rerouting with CitySelect software, although enabling this reduces the amount of maps I can load.

My current bike has a 12V accessory socket, so powering the iPAQ isn't a problem any longer. I don't use my bike offroad but if I did I'd prefer the robustness of my Garmin over my iPAQ setup, but luckily I have the best of both worlds. I generally use the iPAQ now, and might even put the Garmin up for sale....oh, and I use the sleeve on the bike as opposed to the BT unit since I only have one socket to plug into. Using the BT unit would require the use of another power lead or ensure the batteries are fresh - something I tend to forget to do.

To go offroading in a green lane sense would require different maps to those provided by Tomtom or CoPilot. Navman did SmartEXplorer but the scale is not ideal. Perhaps something like Anquet or Memory Map would be far more suitable, but in that I own neither, I'll leave their pros and cons to others.
