Oh well, at least he didn't have to go and ask his supervisor, or offer you a 300 year warranty. |

The regular half a brain cell (sorry if anyone works for these companies, but it does seem to always be the case). I went to purchase a new widescreen TV a year ago and went into my regular out of town Curry's. Thought yeah, you can't go too wrong with TV's, and the staff must know at least a thing or two about them so I thought I'd quiz them on whether there's a huge difference between the regular 60hz and 100hz in widescreen.
BIG MISTAKE! the sales guy came back with, "yeah you get about 300 more channels on that one (the 100hz version)".
Er...... ok.
If not punished enough, went to purchase a mircrowave and wanted to know if it had a seperate GRILL or if it was a COMBI (GRILL with MICROWAVE), sales guy didn't know, asked him if he could go and ask someone else, or surely they had a manual. 20 mins, came back and handed me the manual! Geez!
.....and you want them to know about SatNav ? |

Hi,
I find them very knowledgeable, when asked what time they open and close they don't have to ask anyone, they simply know! :D

I'm afraid I wouldn't trust any of these big chains for specialist product knowledge. If you want that knowledge - speak to a specialist.
In any case, it's often possible to get better prices on Pocket PCs and GPS gear buying from one of the specialists online - though that isn't always true, and shopping around can be worthwhile.
There's a wealth of product information available online - particularly from manufacturers' web sites. I would far rather trust the discussion in our forums here than anything I'm told by a salesperson in Currys or Dixons.
Likewise, for outdoors gear, I'd far rather trust OUTDOORSmagic than a salesperson. Whilst I'm a wheelchair user, modern outdoors gear has made my life much easier. Some would argue that it's a waste me having a Petzl headtorch and a Berghaus Gore-Tex XCR jacket, and I'd be the first to agree that I'm not using these items to anything like their potential. I appreciate that these items are sold more for severe outdoors use than for use on the High Street.
However, when your body is as sick and sensitive as mine, having items that keep you warm, dry even in the most horrendous rain and able to see what you're doing is priceless. Getting cold and wet can make me collapse very easily, and I appreciate the difference between what I'm now using and lesser products.
Mentioning OUTDOORSmagic reminds me that there's often some very cogent GPS discussion on their forums - such as mention of Expansys selling the 'camouflage' version of the eTrex cheaply. The current price is £67 including VAT but not shipping. If anyone wants a fairly basic handheld GPS for a good price and doesn't mind a camo case rather than bright yellow, you can order here.

Not quite Dixons, but the same group:
Visited my local PC World (Stoke) and was looking at the range of PDAs - I wondered if they had a Tungsten T5 yet. I overheard the following:
Customer: So, which is better, Palm OS 5 or Pocket PC 2003?
PC World assistant: Er, Pocket PC definitely.
Customer: Why?
PC World ass: Well, if you do memos and notes and stuff on the Pocket PC, you can transfer them up to your PC.
Customer: Can't you do that with a Palm, then?
PC World ass: No, only Pocket PC.
Of course, it was at this point I had no choice but to shout "Rubbish" and explain just what a Hotsync cradle was, and in fact how it was available before there *were* any Pocket PCs, and that some people consider 'Documents to Go' on Palm OS to do a far better job of transferring MS files (Word, Excel) than the PPC 'Pocket' versions of those programs.
The PC World guy went off to sell someone a SatNav system. |

Sorry, there is no real 'profanity' in the above, just a creative abbreviation of 'assistant' by using only the first three letters. |
