I'm intererested in the variation in the amount of detail that is given in the voice prompts generated by different systems. I'm using a Palm-based system but I'm interested in hearing what PPC ones do as well.

For example TomTom & Mapsonic both say things like "In two hundred yards turn left". Obviously these both use a relatively small database of pre-recorded words and string them together.

Mapopolis has a speech synthesiser which will say "In two hundred yards turn left onto Springfield Road", but it's virtually unintelligible.

Is there any software that will give road names (even just A1, M11, B1303)? I know there are a lot of road names in the UK but you could probably get a fairly high percentage coverage with (at a guess) a few hundred names, plus words like "street", "road" etc.

Do any of the current crop of apps do this?

Glenn.

CoPilot's robotic voice announces road numbers & names. However the lady announcer only says "turn left" etc.

You can choose either option, but have to reload the voice module if you want to switch from one to the other.

I find the robotic voice generally very good.

Perhaps Navigon does this. I was with a friend who has it and IIRC we came up to a turn that I know, where the junction is shaped like a K with the main road being the backbone of the K. Whereas my software just telles me to 'Turn right', I'm sure the Navigon stuff said 'Take the second right', and it's so polite; almost everything is preceded by 'Please'. I think you get some roadnames, but probably not minor ones. I'll see if I can borrow his iPAQ and see what it does say.
