I am 100% brand new to GPS. What I want to do is keep track of freinds when we go skiing in the Utah and Colorado mountains when we get split up. I also want them to have the ability to keep track of me. I realize that everyone will probably have to have a GPS system on them. What do I need? Is there any pocket or handheld units that have the ability to track OTHER GPS units?

Those Rinos...they also have talk capability (2 way radio) are they any good? what would be the TRUE range of the voice in the mountains?

Please feel free to email me at BKSinAZ@yahoo.com

There are some specialized walkie-talkies available that extend the range - normally you can only expect max 3 miles in mountaineous territory.

By the way, a GPS is pretty useless for what you want to achieve. It idoes only passively receive the GPS position but doesn't have the return channel to communicate this found position back to, let's say, your friends.

You could speculate that there could be some cell phone coverage in the ski regions, but you never know for sure. (If you had it, it would give you the return channel).

The only thing the GPS can help you with is to find back "to civilization" when you got lost - but it will not help you find your friends.

Better get an avalanche beeper... and use the Rino as a backup solution
