I received from Expansys a new EMTAC Bluetooth GPS Receiver last Thursday, and since then I’m trying to use it with TomTom Navigator 3 and Ozi Explorer CE.
I’m very disappointed because the results are not acceptable face to several tests and reviews I read before choosing this model:
· With OZI Explorer I had in several situations errors of more than a hundred meters and speed indications of 20 to 30 Kmh when I was standing with the unit in my hand;
· Time to fix is normally superior to 4 minutes and for two times didn’t occur during a urban trip of about 4 or 5 Km (7 minutes);
· The number of used satellites is normally 3 (2D fix) or 4. Only once, for a short period, I had a 6 satellite fix (this is probably related with lack of precision in indications).

What do you suggest I do?
Must I assume I have a defective unit and ask for a replacement?
Should I buy as an alternative Fortuna Clipon and use Xtrac or Xtrac2 software?
Am I expecting too much from this technology (Bluetooth GPS), based on paperware and I should return the unit and think about other type of solution?

Are you running the receiver in SiRF mode?

The Emtac is a very good and reliable receiver. the behaviour you experience is not normal. You should ask for a replacement

lbendlin,

Thank s for your comments.

I'm running the EMTAC receiver in NMEA mode (or at least it sends NMEA messages).

In a short experience made today things improved a lot. The receiver fixed 5 to 6 satellites and precision was closer to what I expected. Time to fix improved a lot also (I’m talking about urban environment with some streets surrounded by 4 to 6 floor buildings).

Sorry if I'm putting a silly question but is it possible to have significantly different results at this level (Time to fix and number of fixes) with the same receiver on the same sites from one day to another?
