I have recently purchased a PDA (HP hx4700), and are looking for a GPS solution for it. The GPS will be used both for car navigation (TomTom), and for hiking (OziExplorer + Otterbox). Battery time, sensitivity, TTFF, size etc. are important criteria.

As I am in any case going to buy TomTom, the TTBT GPS boundle is the cheapest. The disadvantages I can see is short battery life, no EGNOS/WAAS (main use is in Norway, and I am not sure if using these geo-stationary sattelites would be of much help so far north), and not the best sensitivity.

My alternatives available in Norway are:

- Acore AG-600 (extra $70). Cheap, long battery life, but not the best sensitivity from the reviews I have seen.
- Holux GR-230E (extra $115). Only 6 hours battery, but good reviews.
- PRETEC BluetoothGPS logger (aka. RoyalTek BlueGPS) (extra $115). A bit big. Nice logging facilities. Good review on other sites, but only 85% here (and also lower battery time than other sites).
- TFAC BT-30 Bluetooth (extra $70). Not much info on this.
- Haicom HI-303E + BT slipper (extra $70). Good battery, great flexibility (mouse/CF/BT). But uses EverMore chipset, which is not as good as the SIRF chipset. The MMF and S versions are not available in Norway.

Is it worth it to use an additioal USD 70-115 to get one of the above GPS'es, or should I go with the TomTom?

I am eager to get into the "GPS-Game", but would like to make the "right" choise of GPS.

Thanks
- Fredrik

It's a real pity the Delorme Blue Logger is not yet available in Europe...

You might also want to consider the Globalsat 318 as this has a 1650 mAH battery in it which lasted for about 10-11 hours during my tests, it is also replaceable so you could invest in a couple of spares and have GPS for a weekend's backpacking away from all powersources. You would need to find alternate power for the PDA though.
