Help!! My message is long winded but please bear with me.
Ipaq H2210 v1.00, Bluetooth Tomtom Nav3 v3.03(427), GPS v3.03 415/408, with GB map on PQI 40x CF card. Only other additional software are Chess and MSMSMoney which came free when I bought the Ipaq. As well as regular sync'ing I regularly backup everything onto CF card.
Used Sat Nav for 6month, though not heavy user, had BT dropouts at
beginning but once updated with latest version of Nav3/GPS and switched
from SD to CF card - no dropout problems at all. Also loaded the excellent
ukpostcode program.
Unfortunately, my problems started whilst I was trying to prove the value
of backups to a friend. After a hard-reset of my Ipaq and I restored from
my latest backup from CF card. I have experience several different problems all concerning TT3:
1. After restore and soft reset, immediately running TT3 works,
switching on and off the Ipaq without exiting TT3, also works. However,
once I exit TT3, I cannot not re-launch TT3, the time icon just loops, soft
reset the only solution.
2. Sometimes after a reset I get on 'frame ime' displayed in on the top
bar when I try to activate TT3 which then disappears without launching TT3,on second press TT3 then works.
3 After launching TT3 and subsequent exit, after running other programs
such as Word and/or Excel TT3 always refuses to launch with the time icon
looping again soft reset the only solution.
Inevitably, I always have soft-reset.
I have backups containing TT3 before and after loading ukpostcodes but the above symptoms occur regardless of the version of the backup. I have tried numerous hard-resets/restores but same problems persist.
I have previously (a couple of months ago) restored backups containing TT3 from CF card before without problems but, unfortunately, those backups have been overwritten by the more recent ones.
Is there a simple solution or do I have to reload TT3?
I would be most grateful for all suggestions.
Thanks.

Your problems sound very much like a shortage of memory... but that clashes with your statements of restoring after a hard reset... What is your memory situation after the restore/soft reset? _________________ Lutz

Hi Lutz,
Wow - amazing response .
Have just done a hard reset restore. Memory are as follows, all in MB:
Storage- Alloc:28.55/In Use:9.57/Free:18.98
Program- Alloc:28.56/In Use:8.34/Free 20.17
I must stress I have never experienced these kind of problems before, also I'm not exactly a power user.
Any ideas? Would you suggest reloading GB Map?
Thanks.

Not saying this is the same problem but I had big problems restoring my 2210 from a back-up after I did a hard reset because O2 messed up my PDA getting GPRS working.
The problem seemed to be with he TTBTDEV.DLL file in Windows folder. The only way I could overcome was to completely re-load from scratch and purchase Sprite back-up which only costs a few dollars. This is excellent software. Check you have this TTBTDEV file in your windows directory. Worth a look....

I would agree. Doing a complete wipe and then installing TomTom from the 3.0x update should get you back on track. (no need to install anything from CD first) _________________ Lutz

Got the following reply from Tomtom:
This problem has been researched by Sprite who make the back-up application;
We are now able to offer our customers two solutions:
“Sprite Software” (http://www.spritesoftware.com/home.html) which provides the Backup Software for this device has released an update, in which this error was fixed. Customers can download this update from their website and install it on their Pocket PC. Restoring a Backup including TTN3 will no longer cause problems. BTW – Customers will have to pay for this update, If they don’t want to buy the update of the backup software we can also give them a workaround.
- Before restoring the backup to the 2210, you’ll see a list of files that will get restored. All files have little check boxes in front. Only files with a checkbox in front will be restored to the Pocket PC.
- Take out the check for the file “ttbtdev.dll” before selecting the “Restore” button. (picture below)
- When the backup is restored and the Pocket PC booted up without any problems perform a soft reset on the PDA
- When it reboots again without any problems install the latest version of TTN3 + GPS again from the website. This will place the missing file “ttbtdev.dll” again where it belongs.
I will try out at the weekend when I have more time.
Will also post result, hopefully successful.
Thanks for all your help.
Regards.

so basically all you need to do is keep a copy of a "good" ttbtdev.dll on the storage card. Or - go back to GPS driver 2.07 - that one did not have a ttbtdev.dll and therefore will not have this problem. _________________ Lutz

I followed instructions as provided by Tomtom, i.e. unchecked ttbtdev.dll before restoring from CF card and re-applied Nav3 (v3.03) and GPS(v3.03) and guess what ... it didn't work!
BT would not activate - came up with 2 errors- 1 re insufficient memory, unfortunately I did not note down the other.
Anyway, to avoid further frustration I started from scratch, i.e. hard reset, installed Nav3 (v3.00) from CD, applied v3.03 upgrade.
It seems to be working fine now, though I've yet to give it a full test run. |

It is a BT file, so it seems obvious that if you don't restore it TT will not work properly with BT. I must be missing something.
Take a tip from me, have a look at the sprite software, it really is quite good, and you can trial it for 30 days foc, so if it still does not work, nothing lost. I copied TTBTDEV.DLL to my SD card as a backup as I tried restoring in the past and got in a similar mess, but Sprite backup copies the file and restores it.
I was at the time looking to move from wired to BT, still am when I get a bit of spare cash! That is why I needed it to work properly when I changed over.

Steve- thanks for your advice, I will definitely look into Sprite. It's a shame that Sprite, or HP, does not offer a free upgrade as the supplied backup software does not work properly.
Anyway, tested TTN3 over the weekend and all seems to be working fine.
Regards.
Alan.
PS. Unless you need to take TTN3 on walkabouts I don't see the point of the BT unit over wired. I know a number of guys with wired GPS and their feedback indicates wired GPS to be far better than BT GPS. I bought BT GPS because at the time the package was only marginally more expensive than the wired package. |

Problem is the Grass is always greener.......
I think deep down, that is why I have still not changed out my wired unit!!!

At least with BT you have that option should you decide to make use of it. Plus the advantage of placing the receiver anywhere in the vehicle for optimum reception. With wired you are confined to a vehicle.
But then, like everything else, it does have its bad points.
