Can anyone tell me how I can convert OS grid references into co-ordinants for my GPS (Garmin 60CS), or recommend software to do this?
I have a rambleing quiz and all the co-ords for the clues are OS grid references. I would like to input all the OS grid refs as way points into my GPS. |

You can change the position format on the 60CS to British Grid, then input your waypoints in that format. See page 64 of the User Manual for details. _________________ Tim |

Hi Whizzo,
I don’t know the Garmin 60CS. Can you change the Position Format to “British Grid” for the Ordnance Survey Grid References? If you are using it in conjunction with an OS map then you may want to change the Map Datum from WGS84 to ORD SRVY GB, else the position may be out by 100 metres. This is because OS Maps use the ORD SRVY GB Map Datum
If you change the Position Format to “British Grid”, you may find that your quiz quotes 6 figure Grid References (e.g. ST 123 678), when your GPS uses 10 figure Grid References (e.g. ST 12345 67890). Both
Grid References are the same location, although the shorter one is less accurate.

Go to
http://www.gps.gov.uk/
they have a 'coordinate converter' but you have have to register with the site to use it (it appears free to register).
Hope this works.

Have a look at The Ordnance Survey website I believe they provide algorithms and sample code for converting in both directions on their web site.
Also take a look at www.StreetMap.co.uk, there is provision there to convert coordinates. _________________ Ian.

Other possibilities include, but are not limited to -
WayPoint WorkBench (an eXcel spreadsheet)
http://www.sheps.clara.net/WW.htm
GPS Utility (which also knows how to upload your
converted data into your Garmin)

It is correct to say that this is not the same David J Roberts that used to work in Chessington. _________________ DeeJay
