2d view or 3d view? experience?

dear all,
has there been discussion concerning 2d vs 3d view during navigation?
perhaps since i'm rather old and used to look at paper maps, i found fancy 3d view (e.g. in tomtom or smartst v2) not really helpful.
imho, 2d view gives more a feeling of "seeing more", i.e. broader/beyond what we are currently driving on. 3d view more or less provides mapping of what we actually see, i.e. "just that".
is this kind of impression a common one or just my ignorance to "modern things"?

The topic keeps being discussed as more applications add a 3D view. It seems to be a matter of personal preference. Many people like a 3D view, but everyone I know personally prefers the traditional 2D view. I have tried both in 3 different programs but still prefer the 2D.

It's definitely a personal preference. You can find that on 3D you get more of an indication on when the road bends and more advanced warning of seeing a bend or junction on the road ahead. However 2D tends to be better more if you want to see roads in proximty to the road you are on (e.g. adjacent roads).

I keep drifting back to 2D, TomTom have a useful 3D view which is better than most but I still find 2D gives me a better view ahead.
