I understand that WAAS capability is only good for the USA, but read about the European one EGNOS which is going to be availabe at some stage... any idea when this will happen and will handheld unit's that have WAAS being able to take advantage of the european one?

If so, would it be of benefit to go for a handheld that already has WAAS capability?

Although all Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) are regional systems,
Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) United States and Canada -
European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) European Union -
Satellite-Based Augmentation System (MSAS) for Japan -
it is important to ensure that they are compatible and that SBAS providers cooperate with each other and coordinate their actions.

Compatibility will make each system more effective and ensure that all the systems can be integrated into a seamless worldwide navigation system.

Interoperability testing successfully took place in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
In theory at least, WAAS capable receivers should also work with EGNOS.

More info can be found at the ESA website

EGNOS is way behind schedule, should have gone live around April this year, but still no sight on the horizon apart from a "should be soon".
