I`ve had a good look thru the posts but cannot find the answer i`m looking for. With the hood down on my MX5 i can`t hear a thing, can i plug an extension speaker into the headphone socket of the pda or is it not that simple.

It's not that simple unless you use a set of headphones.

You will need an amplified speaker which will need to be plugged into a power source. Cheap ones are simply hands-free kits with a speaker that plugs into a cig lighter socket with the lead plugged into the phono socket. Other more expensive solutions are powered PDA mounts which have built-in speakers.

If you want to spend some money, then there is the QuBit PDA Sound System. http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/qubit-sound.php. I haev seen it advertised for around 99euro.
