Hello all, I was hoping you could give me some advice.

I've been thinking about buying SatNav for ages now, but haven't really been able to afford it (or justify spending money on it). But I've had enough of getting lost or getting stressed about the possibility of getting lost, so I think the time is right! Laughing

I'm torn between TomTom 3 (the bluetooth version), which I've seen for £160, or the PrymeNav/Fortuna Clip-On bundle, which is £170. TomTom is obviously better known and - some seem to argue - the best option, but I'm also told that the Clip-On GPS unit is better than the TomTom unit.

Please help a very very confused beginner to spend his money on something he won't regret terribly!

Thanks,
Chris

PrymeNav appears under many different guises such as Deluo Routis, Intellinav, Socket My Navigator and more whose names I forget. If you browse our software reviews section you will see we have reviewed the Deluo USA and Socket Uk/EU versions.

Of the two I prefer TomTom, it has support for custom POIs (e.g. our Speed Camera Database) and there are free plug-ins available such as POI Alert which triggers an alarm as you approach a POI, important if it is a speed camera! and UKPostCode which allows you to navigate to a full 7 figure post code. The large UK following menas there is plentiful support and a large community of users and developers.

PrymeNav does not have a very big following in the UKin any of its incarnations. As for the BT GPS, the Fortyna is smaller and has a replaceable battery but TomTom's Leadtek manufactured BT GPS is still a good performer. There are bundles with TomTom software and other GPS receivers available or you could buy the software and hardware seperately to get the combination you desire.

Thanks for replying, Darren. I've read through the reviews section, and am quite keen on the POI features of TomTom, especially UKPostCode and the directory of Shell petrol stations (as my car is an Optimax slurper!)

I did consider buying software and hardware seperately, but the price is more than I can justify. Can you recommend somewhere that does a TomTom/Fortuna bundle, as globalpositioningsystems.co.uk don't appear to?

Cheers,

Chris

Expansys and Handnav both offer a bundle with TomTom3 and the Fortuna Clip-On but they are over £230. If you can get TomTom3 BT for £160 then the Fortuna Clip-On is not worth the additional £70.
