You can of course plan routes on your ppc as Itinieries and these can be saved and loaded when required. This feature also allows you to plan over different maps e.g. different countries, and if done correctly, a preloaded route will be live and waiting for you when you switch maps.

I used this successfully this month when driving through France and Italy and achieved a kind of cross-border-routing over several maps.

What program did you use to plan the route?

I used TT3 with Major European Roads (with the Itinerary) to obtain a good overview and choice of route.

Then I used the detailed TT3 European maps (segments for France and the complete Italian map) for detailed locations and cross-over or overlap points, again with the Itinerary.

You can leave an itinerary loaded even when you switch maps, locations not on the currently loaded map are 'greyed-out'. Important to save intineraries.

Once the Full route has been established, the principle is to set up the route on each map (less complicated if you do this in sequence) by using the PLAN button on the itinieary. This isn't as straightforward as it could be since the apllication is somewhat clumsy and you do need to alter the settings as you go along. In its defence however it does provide a great deal of flexibility, but it takes time to understand the logic behind the various options.

When you close down the system or switch to another map, the planned route is not lost, unless you plan another or clear it. If it is cleared etc it can always be recovered by loading the itineary and pressing the Plan button.

Once you are driving a route and come to a cross-over point, you should simply be ale to switch to the adjacent map and will automaticaly be picked up on the route.

This is not foolproof. If for instance you are diverted and pick up your route on the 'new' map further down the road from your planned "Drive By", the system may try to route you backwards. There is however an option in the Navigator Section to "Skip next drive-by" which can help.

Once you become aware of the potential problems then the feature becomes vey useful. As with most applications, you have to learn by experience.

It would have been great if TomTom could use the planned route from Major European Roads when you load a detailed map. Now I have to work out cross over points and add them to each detailed map to get routes..
