I am a member of a Search & Rescue team in Calif. Where we find our team most commonly is near lakes, rivers and streams. Some of the routes place us on remote US forestry roads to get to our destination.

I would like to use the Topo maps to map out the terrain first and also track where we have been. ( i.e. documentation of finds) We also at times found ourselves out in the middle of a lake or island. My partner uses a etrek legend by Garmin to plot some of the areas to search by cooridances. I would like to see the lay of the land and pinpiont on a map so to print it out.

I have been looking at the SysOn CF GPS unit due to most site and forums say that the sensitivity is good under trees. The other option I thought about was a Garmin legend with an adapter to my PPC to give the way points and tracks. I then could download to my laptop and print. Seems to me to be a lot of work for this.

The program that I have been looking at the most was DeLorme Topo 5.0 it also comes with a street mapping CD or Land Voyage which has USGS maps already. I should be also be able to import forestry maps to work with x-trac right ?

Please point me in the right direction ??????? Smile

You're already mostly there. DeLorme seems like a good choice for what you are up to. You should also have a close look at their latest BlueTooth GPS receiver - it holds very long (8+ hours) and includes a huge trace log (50000 data points). Check the site's home page for a link to the review.
